This lively and colorful portrait of a Grand Prix horse named Cuba was first sketched by Melinda Buie in oil pastels; she then meticulously applied acrylic paint in layers before using turpentine to erase some of the original pastel marks, leaving sketched lines. Final flourishes in oil paint bring the piece to life. Gallery-wrapped canvas with unfinished edges, it's signed on the back and ready to hang.

Buie Studio
"In my art, I strive to capture the essence of my surroundings, drawing inspiration from the landscapes of East Texas where I grew up. This includes animals, buildings, and landscapes."

She is deeply passionate about beauty in all its forms, whether it be the gentle curve of a cow’s hoof or the expressive gaze of a dog. Her work is an invitation to connect with the familiar—elements that resonate with everyday life.

She utilizes oil, acrylics, and oil pastels, working primarily from her photographs.

Encouraged by her parents, Melinda began painting at a very early age. After graduating The University of Texas at Austin, she moved to NYC and opened a studio while also working for the Whitney Museum, Gluckman Mayner Architects, and the Gottlieb Foundation; all played a pivotal role in her growth as an artist. She has shown nationally and internationally and has gallery representation.
