Stephen Cimini

"I don't look to be inspired. I paint, and inspiration finds me."

Building on the architectural origins which have been the basis of his work for over a decade, Stephen Cimini has started referring to his compositions as "random symmetry." That is, he creates a balance on the canvas with no discernible pattern, allowing a symmetrical, meditative composition to emerge. He employs the golden mean as a reference, which can often be seen in the composition.

Cimini uses oil paint mixed with a cold wax medium. As he layers the paint, organic surfaces evolve within the restrained lines of the composition. During this process, an environment develops, giving an emotional story to the thoughtfully planned compositions. Cimini's color choices vary. Sometimes, he deliberately creates a series with particular colors, and other times, he allows the colors to appear impulsively, fueled by intuition and experience. Color remains a constantly unfolding mystery.

Stephen Cimini studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
