"The act of creation is a profoundly satisfying experience. Taking an abstract idea, giving it form, refining proportions, placing lines, integrating functionality, and endowing this spark of imagination with real, physical presence is a process that gives me great joy."

The artist strives to create furniture that is functional, yet provides a spark to brighten the routine of daily life. Basic design principles such as shape, line, movement, and balance work together in harmony to create furniture that is engaging, functional, and full of life.

Vincent Leman creates unconventional fine furniture; his work was originally based on the abstraction of traditional furniture and has evolved to span everything from extravagant accent pieces to refined, modern pieces. All of Leman's furniture begins with sketches...many sketches. The work starts with a concept, whether it's a particular movement or curve, or an idea like acrobats balanced on top of each other. The concept is refined and reworked, and eventually, there is a point where the concept is ready to develop into a piece of furniture. The design is refined, then scanned into a computer and turned into a vector rendering. The pieces are then carefully cut to shape, assembled, sanded, and painted.

Vincent Leman can hardly remember a time when he wasn't building furniture. He grew up building custom cabinetry and woodwork for the family business. After completing his degree in mechanical engineering at Purdue University, Vincent made the decision to return to furniture building after realizing a strong aversion to cubicles and deskwork. Today, he creates his distinctive furniture in his studio in northwestern Indiana, outside of Chicago.
