Ellen Silberlicht

"My studio is my passage to adventure with unlimited possibilities! Combining my love of clay and fiber constantly motivates my imagination, gives me great joy, and engages my creative spirit. "

Ellen Silberlicht has married her two favorite media, clay and felt. She plays with the unique forms, vibrant colors, and deep textures of these contrasting materials, creating a harmonious balance. Embellishing with mixed media gives the pieces their finishing touch. Joy and humor are present in Silberlicht's work. She finds both to be necessary in her daily life as well as in her artwork.

Ellen Silberlicht's raku vessels are textured by applying sodium silicate on the outside of a cylinder, which is dried and expanded. The vessel is then raku fired. Fibers are then chosen, and the felting and forming begin. Felting occurs when wool, warm soapy water, and massaging are combined. Most pieces have armatures underneath the felted forms. Glass beads and other mixed media are hand stitched for embellishment.

Ellen Silberlicht's youth was filled with fiber arts and creativity. Destined to become a potter from an early age, she attended Rochester Institute of Technology. She worked with Jocheved Marc, a leading Israeli ceramic artist, while finishing her BFA. Always loving to learn, Silberlicht consistently attends workshops in clay and felting throughout the country, exploring methods and skills and adding to her innovative vocabulary.
