Phyllis S. Clarke

"Growing up amid the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains in south central Colorado was the greatest gift I can imagine. It has shaped my view of the world and my place in it ever since."

Animals are Phyllis Clarke's favorite subject. The birds and bobcats, coyotes and brush rabbits that abound in her backyard make appearances in her artwork. She has great respect for animals and their spirit--which she aims to reflect in her work.

Clarke creates her vessels from soft, colorful glass, using sculptural and off-hand techniques with a glass-blowing torch. The intimate relationship she forms with each piece in the flame, she believes, is a path toward a higher level of understanding.

Phyllis has participated in several workshops and classes. She has volunteered as an assistant for a class at Pilchuck taught by Lucio Bubaco and recieved instruction by Paul Trautman and Kisao Iburi, also at Pilchuk.
