Mary Johannessen

"By combining a slightly quirky style with fine craftsmanship, I create approachable, uplifting art glass."

Though she credits her inspiration to the folk-art traditions of patchwork quilting and tile mosaics, Mary Johannessen's background as a designer is also apparent in the artistic sensibility of her kiln-formed glass artwork. Her understanding and expression of rhythm in design elicits a sense of playfulness, expansiveness, and joy.

Johannessen's creations begin with colorful, hand-cut pieces of glass—many of them stenciled, painted, or stamped with her original designs. She lays out the glass pieces in a process she likens to assembling a jigsaw puzzle, and then kiln fires the resulting assemblage into a solid panel. Her pieces are adaptable for both wall and tabletop display.

Mary Johannessen received her BFA in graphic design from MassArt in Boston. She continued her education with printmaking classes at the SMFA in Boston, DeCordova Museum, and Zea Mays Printmaking. Her education in glass includes courses at Diablo Glass School, Bullseye Glass, The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, OATKA Glass School, and Worcester Craft Center.
