Carole Guthrie Art

"Painting for me is a sensuous encounter with brush into paint, paint on canvas, finding the way to completion and unity. Composition is bound on canvas with each color and shape integral to the work. When all is working, the painting pleases the eye like a Chopin etude pleases the ear. One false note and the symphony has no harmony."

Abstract painter Carole Guthrie lists her influences as: "Picasso's constructions. Georgia O'Keeffe's curved forms that fill the canvas in a beautiful way. Diebenkorn's expressionist abstractions. Tapies' textures. Eva Hesse's poetic shapes that take one's breath away."

The artist uses all media to inform her work, and her current acrylic paintings on canvas draw from her experience in watercolor and monotypes. Using a combination of brushes, brayers, scrapers and palette knives, Guthrie places opaque shapes against transparent passages to create a unique depth and personal style.

Carole Guthrie studied art at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago and received a BA in Modern Art Theory and Curriculum at UMASS, Amherst, followed by a Masters degree from MassArt, Boston in Art Education. In 2018, two of her paintings were purchased by MGM Resorts International, where they will hang among work by the likes of Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, and Fernand Leger.
