Mark Chatterley

"Everything in a state of flux, changing and reforming. Nothing is permanent and nothing stays the same. I try to show the thoughts and feelings of the human condition."

Sculptor Mark Chatterley is interested in the dream world, the real world, and the place that exists in between. Sculpting animals that directly engage the viewer on an almost human level, Chatterley individually creates each clay sculpture from the bottom up.

Starting with an eight inch slab of clay, Chatterley slowly builds his forms, allowing each section to set up before the next slab is attached. It can take him several weeks to build each figure. His bubbly and bumpy surfaces are created with a signature crater glaze that the artist has developed. As Chatterley says, "These pieces are like dug up relics of a time to come." Each piece is fired twice with the second firing hot enough to vitrify the clay, allowing the sculptures to live outside year round.

Chatterley received a BFA and MFA from Michigan State University. His work can be found in diverse public and private collections worldwide.

Color/Finish: as expected
Absolutely wonderful!

Loved the color and character of this piece online, and it's even better in person! There is texture, and expression and delight in this piece! I do not understand how such expression can exist in something made of clay, but it is certainly there! Arrived very quickly and well-packed. Was not expecting the blue play-toy (a ball), but it sits just in front of the dog on my tile floor. SO much character and whimsy!! LOVE IT!

Color/Finish: darker than expected
Creative, unique

Love this dog. Yes it is grey and has a subtle finish. Nothing bold and bright. It is small, not an imposing look or size. First thought out of box was, oh not so hot. After a few days, love it. Sweet and compelling. Found the right spot in my home - not the spot I imagined for it when I bought it, but moved him around and found exactly where he wanted to be. It is more grey then I imagined and less blue, but I love him the same. I am happy with him, wonderful.

I love Mark's sculptures . This is my second puppy purchase.

I use one puppy on a coffee table and the other sitting on the fireplace

I would not by this again

Not what I had expected, not much character or brightness to the color, rather plan and dull.

Good Puppy

Lovely blue color, nice size and amazing texture. I bought the sitting puppy and put him in my den.
