A hand-sculpted lizard perches on the rim of this wheel-thrown earthenware vase, looking lifelike enough to scamper away at any moment. The artist applies layers of glaze and underglaze to create a richly detailed surface in vibrant colors. Each is unique and may vary.

"People often tell me that my work is unlike anything they have seen. Much of my work is thrown on the wheel, and then sculptural additions are added. These additions range from lizards, frogs, snakes and fish, to ivy, leaves and birds. "

Perhaps because Lisa Scroggins has lived mostly in urban settings, her creative thinking often turns to nature and organic forms. It seems only natural to her to sculpt from nature. The artist's love of ceramics began in high school and progressed as she attended the Rhode Island School of Design, and later, the Parsons School of Design in New York City.

Scroggins loves the tactile experience and the symmetry of hand-throwing vessels on the wheel, and the asymmetrical focus of adding small pieces of sculpture to the vessels. Each piece of Lisa Scroggins' work is created entirely by the artist's hand.

Lisa Scroggins' background in graphics shows through in each piece of ceramics with her love of patterns, bright colors, and use of composition.

The gecko has found a new home.

Today I received my vase that was double boxed to keep it from breaking in shipment. Once I opened it I was absolutely thrilled with the piece. The red is very vibrant and the gecko/lizzard was icing on the cake, as they say. I absolutely love the piece and I've already found a perfect place to showcase it.

LOVE this vase -- and the adorable lizard

This is a very unique vase -- I love it. The red is beautiful and the lizard crawling on the outside is adorable. I have it filled with tulips and sitting on my cracked-glass dining table. Stunning, really.

Object d'Art AND Object of My Heart

I could put flowers in this beautiful vase, but that would almost be "gilding the lily". It's beautiful all on its own, and the lizard perched at the rim is a delight. The artist has added multiple layers of surface glaze, so it glows with a lovely sheen. It's my new favorite piece from Artful Home!
