Wood takes on the luminous beauty of glass in this sculptural vessel. To create it, the artist assembles dozens of small maple blocks into a rough form, then turns it on a lathe. The surface is dyed in shifting shades of deep purple and bright fuchsia, then finished with a high gloss lacquer for a depth of color rarely seen in wood. The elegant recurve-shaped opening offers a peek of the contrasting matte black interior.
