Blackbirds hitch a ride on their slithering reptilian friends in these cheeky sculptures inspired by vintage toys. Carved from poplar wood using a bandsaw and sander and finished with latex enamel and metallic acrylic paint, each snake rolls along on four functional wheels.

"I have a strong attachment to the old toys and objects I had as a child, and it comes out now in my love of animals and mythology."

Dona Dalton considers her work to be "toys as sculpture." Drawing from observation, and an enthusiasm for the narrative potential of Egyptian mythology, she creates works that imply relationship and connection, playfulness and spirituality. A bird at the workplace or a cat in a boat can be the best of companions.

Using poplar, pine, and aspen, Dalton carves wood on a band saw, and uses a rotary carver for smaller figures and details. Like icing on a cake, the colorful layers of acrylic paint, latex enamel, and metallic leaf bring each piece to life.

Dona Dalton received a BFA in sculpture from the Philadelphia College of Art. Her work has been shown at the American Craft Council Show, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, and the Washington DC Craft Show, among others. Her work can be found in galleries throughout the USA.

My Joy Riders

I'm glad I purchased the Snake Riders. I have the sculpture above my desk at home. I initially had them in another spot, but I wasn't feeling the joy and began regretting the purchase. But once I moved it, the Snake Riders provides a moment of happiness each time I look up from my monitor.

What a delightful wood sculpture! I love it.

After agonizing over which Dona Dalton piece to order, I finally settled on Snake Riders. Boy, did I make a good choice. Every year I always buy myself a birthday present. This was my gift this year. It arrived today and I could not be happier with this sculpture. It's perfect for me. I love folk art, whimsy, and color - this piece has it all. It is sitting on my mantle piece right now. I know for sure that this will not be my only Dona Dalton purchase.
