Mieko Mintz

"Traditionally, kantha were supposed to help keep their wearers safe from harm and aid in obtaining happiness and prosperity, all of which Mieko wishes for you."

Born in southern Japan, Mieko Mintz uses handcrafted textiles from around the world to make contemporary pieces. Her signature line includes jackets made from vintage sari kantha, each with its own variety of colors and its own story.

Mintz's work follows in the kantha tradition. First, her designs are made into kantha throws in West Bengal, which she then cuts to fit her jacket designs. Her focus is a kantha line that is not only comfortable, but also contemporary and sophisticated.

Cuttings left over from making the jackets are recycled one more time to create hats, bags, and jewelry.

Lovely soft cotton; characterful. Expensive.

The mauvy blues shirt is a little more subdued in colour than the photo. As website says it is all cotton, not silk on one side like the red-toned shirt, yet just as expensive. Also mine does not have the pretty floral embroidery on the turned-back cuff that is in photo. I have Rajasthani kantha reversible jackets that cost one fifth or one quarter of this one, so you are really paying for the name; and although I like the look and feel of this I was on the point of returning the shirt when I saw the price has just been reduced, so Artful Home refunded me 20% which I appreciate and I decided to keep it. I am 5'7" with 40 inch chest and hips and medium is a good size, roomy enough to wear something underneath.

Beautiful shirt

I think this shirt would be better for someone tall.
The sleeves were so long for me I had to roll them up which covered the lovely trim.
The workmanship is gorgeous but too boxy long and just not so great for a short person.
There is an extra button sewn inside one of the pockets. I wanted to keep it but the price versus how it looked on me just didn't make sense.

Color redder than pictured. Material is softer, a bit flimsy. Jacket is overall very nice. Back is longer than I expected but that's good for my body type.

Beautiful but...

This was delayed for over 3 months, but I was glad I waited. It doesn't seem quite as substantial as the one I bought 3 years ago, in red; the fabric seems more fragile (also, it didn't come with an extra button). However, a note said that it would be repaired if damaged.

Deep beautiful purples and blues.

I had ordered the yellow tones in this shirt about a year or more ago and did not like the colors for my complexion, I returned it. The blues and purples on this shirt are very deep with little gold and white highlights that pop and give the top, either side, some variation and interest. The shirt is oversized, as many of Meiko Mintz's designs are, but since it is a straight cut it looks a little longer but not overly voluminous. Lightweight.
