Sarah's fascination with glass stems from the endless array of colors that can be utilized and experimented with. It was this aspect that initially attracted her to the medium. Continuously seeking to innovate, she explores new combinations of colors and design methods. The sheer delight of crafting objects that are both visually captivating and equally enjoyable to hold is what drives her dedication to glass artistry.
Sarah creates these ornaments by rolling hot, molten glass through a tray of crushed, colored glass, which melts onto the surface. Once all the colors are applied, she uses a metal pick to swirl the glass in the center. The glass is then shaped into a ball using a wooden block, and a bubble is initiated with an air compressor. From there, the glass is blown up and allowed to cool slowly overnight once finished.
Sarah LaSpada resides in Boston, MA, and divides her time between Hudson Beach Glass in Beacon, NY, and NOCA Glass School in Cambridge, MA, where she leads glassblowing workshops and demonstrations. She began blowing glass after attending a glass ornament-making workshop at Hudson Beach Glass in 2013. A year later, she was hired as the shop assistant, where she began learning the basics. After graduating from SUNY New Paltz with a BFA in Metalsmithing and a BA in Art History in 2016, she began working in the hot shop more frequently, eventually turning it into her career and passion.
