Nolan Prohaska

"All of my pieces are a reflection of my awe toward the natural world around us."
Nolan Prohaska has always been fascinated by the outdoors, and he continues that focus in his current work. Utilizing both glassblowing and solid-working techniques, he creates intricately assembled sculptures and vessels in a variety of shapes, all inspired by landscapes and seascapes.
All of Nolan Prohaska's work begins as molten glass in a 2000 degree furnace. After the glass is gathered onto the end of a blowpipe or solid punty rod, the artist adds layers of colored glass, heating and shaping until the piece is finished. The glass cools slowly in an annealing oven before the finishing work of grinding and polishing. Sculptural work is then sandblasted and acid etched.
When Nolan Prohaska entered the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1997, he was pursuing a degree in horticulture with a minor in liberal arts. During his sophomore year, he found himself in an introductory course for glass. To his surprise, he found that he had a natural talent for working with the material.
