This contemporary stoneware basket is impressed using the artist's favorite stamps, sticks, vintage gear, and a high fire decal or two. The top and bottom sections are decorated in a vivid red, the middle section remains bare and is adorned with bold markings, black and white decals, and a detail of red glaze. The entire piece is rubbed with dark oxides to accent impressed textures. Each vessel is fired twice, first to temper the clay for glazing, and a second firing to over 2300F. The inside of the vessel is fully glazed, will hold water, and can be used as a vase. The sturdy hand tied rattan handle is approximately 11" wide on this piece. The basket is signed on the bottom.

"I enjoy the process and science of working with clay. Each stage requires unique techniques, acquired skills, time, instinct, and patience. But mostly patience."

Susan's intent is to create a strong design and unique visual element with the hope that her work begins a dialogue that encompasses joy in everyday use.

Wills begins by constructing prototypes and templates to define the size and shape of each piece. The templates allow her to reproduce her designs as well as revisit ideas, refine shapes, and develop new forms. Most of her work is hand built from slabs of stoneware clay. The wares are formed and allowed to dry before being loaded into the kiln. Each piece is fired twice, a bisque firing to temper the ware for glazing, then a final firing at over 2300F to vitrify the clay. Wills often accents her work with hand-tied rattan handles, weathered steel knobs, and handmade decorative elements.

Susan studied graphic design in college and built a career creating designs for advertising, publishing, and web applications. She is mostly self taught in both metalsmithing and ceramics and has been fortunate to have studio space to practice and explore both mediums.

Very Nice!

I just received this lovely creation by Susan Wills. It is larger than I thought it would be and so pretty! The details on this basket make it that much more interesting and the overarched handle is a great finishing touch. This piece adds a bright spot of color to our home.

A whimsical addition

This piece of art is all that I hoped it would be. The detail on the bottom was commented on by a friend. There is a lot to look at and I know it will gather many compliments. And it has a bit of a heft to it also.

Love at first sight!

Whimsical geometric pressings, rich deep color, skilled basketry. All of the design elements make this one a winner.
