Katie Bramlage imagines the work was stumbled upon, tumbling and humbling in the rhythms of waves, inspiring a closer investigation. Reminiscent of carefree time spent stooped down, combing the place where water meets land and leaves its treasure behind. For example, bowls and baskets—meant to gather your fruits, stones, pinecones, and favorite bounties—leave behind captivating shadows.
Bramlage employs loose and lo-fi hand-building techniques, primarily using hand-rolled coils and slabs to construct vessels that are then glazed and fired to midrange temperatures to ensure food safety and strength. You'll also notice the use of other primitive materials, such as string, sticks, wood, and glue.
She studied geology and interior design before settling into her BFA degree in Craft-Ceramics from the College of Creative Studies located in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated in 2011 with honors. She has since participated in numerous juried art fairs and gallery shows, as well as teaching and leading workshops regularly around the metro Detroit area.
