An ancient motif - hoop earrings with granulation - brought into the 21st century with modern post backs. Solid 22K gold, they are based on ancient filigree designs and are as sought after today as they were 3,000 years ago. Granulation is an ancient technique, mastered by relatively few goldsmiths. It takes years of practice using the purest of metals. Each tiny granule is made by hand, and making enough for one piece of jewelry can take weeks, then placed one by one using a tiny brush. The piece is heated almost to the melting point. At that precise moment, the granules fuse and become one with the item being granulated. The technique is evident in museum collections featuring ancient jewelry. The 22 karat gold is a special alloy the artist makes, giving it a purity of 98% gold. Ear nuts for 14k posts are not shown, but included.

Nancy Troske

"I feel a strong connection with goldsmiths from the very distant past: Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine. By working with their materials and techniques, there is a sense of continuity, shared tradition, and a love of meticulous craftsmanship."

For over two decades, Nancy Troske has created jewelry rooted in ancient goldsmithing traditions. Her process of stone selection, metalwork, and hand granulation reflects the origins of this craft, which began in the third millennium B.C.

Troske holds a BFA in fine arts and has trained extensively in New York City and San Francisco. After beginning her career as a commercial bench jeweler and diamond setter, she returned to the East Coast and established her studio in Princeton, New Jersey, in 2009. She has also taught jewelry workshops at the Princeton Arts Council and by special invitation at Princeton University.

Her work has been featured in galleries and museum stores in the United States and Australia, including the Princeton University Art Museum, the Barnes Foundation, and the Australian National Maritime Museum. Most recently, Troske was commissioned to create a collection for the Princeton University Art Museum’s new gift store, developed over several months and inspired by the museum’s architectural forms and historical artifacts.
