Russell Thurston
Russell looks at every painting as an experiment, an exploration, and also a collaboration between his plans and the painting’s. Sometimes the work becomes a mirror, reflecting the world he's trying to make sense of. Other times, it’s a window into a place he’d like to escape to.
Russell works with encaustic materials — using pigments mixed with hot wax that are burned in as an inlay. Often, Russell will embed items from nature into his work. He produces encaustic paintings on paper and on panels.
Russell was born in Norman, Oklahoma, and received a BFA from Cal State University and an MFA from School of the Art Institute Chicago. He currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his wife and three dogs.
