"201 Brown Street" is a painting of the artist's friends in college. She wanted to make a large painting with live models and they agreed to pose for her. They came in the early morning before class began to pose. Some of them fell asleep while posing. Many of them were in a bluegrass band called the "Foggy Vision Boys." She is still friends with many of them, some are still making music. Her greatest joy is having captured the gesture of their youth.

Giclee print of an original oil painting. Ships flat.

"Making art is my calling. Color is the most important element in my art. It carries emotion, form and a sense of place. My palette was formed in the Dominican Republic where I was born. The richness of the Caribbean is at the heart of my images."

Julia Santos Solomon is one of the most successful contemporary Dominican artists on the landscape today. Her work is featured in galleries and private collections throughout the world. The bright colors of the Caribbean landscape are an important vehicle for her expression.

Julia Santos Solomon was classically trained, and studied masters Rembrandt, Vermeer, Goya, and Velasquez. Her years in Italy brought beauty, stimulation, and clarity to her work. Rome revealed a shocking tropical palette, turquoise, pinks, yellows, and greens. Her sense of color and use of gold leaf are informed by her Dominican heritage.

Julia Santos Solomon received her BFA in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design, where she participated in the European Honors Program in Rome, Italy. She studied at Parsons School of Design, Cooper Union, and The Art Students League. She has been a professor at the Parsons School of Design, and she is a Founding Faculty member of Altos de Chavon School of Design in La Romana, DR.
