Giclee print on heavy, archival paper with deckled borders on each side. From an original oil on canvas. Signed at bottom right and numbered at bottom left. Limited edition of 195 in each size with 15 artist proofs.

This particular oil wasn't easy but it wasn't made to be. The artist wanted a row of red trees showing through a lattice of tree trunks and foliage. Simple enough, but many of these elements began to take on a 'need' for the light to filter through in various ways, leaving a lot of possible options.

Another consideration presented itself: how much front to back depth should be allowed? The artist went for a number of layers of depth in the foreground and out beyond the red trees. This was going to be a intricate forest, so how to keep it interesting?

Complexities continued to be added but the artist kept to the idea of light illuminating that line of red trees. Knowing what the painting is about is very important. In this case, that knowledge kept him from getting lost in a convoluted forest.

It took numerous sessions to complete, with the final two in the company of Terry, who flew in for private lessons. A lot of information was imparted with this oil as different colors and compositional elements were tried. It was a bit of a circus at times with all of the artful juggling, but an enjoyable process as all the elements finally found their optimal places and the painting was declared done.

"Making giclees gives me an opportunity to revisit and improve upon my original works."

Ken Elliot's involvement in the art business has spanned over 40 years. He began as a picture framer, worked alongside an art restorer, and became an art dealer before beginning to draw and paint about 25 years ago. In his career, he's been fortunate to have seen remarkably good works of art and met some of the best painters in the field.

Elliot's focus is the landscape and its rich store of ideas and inspiration. He is compelled to work from the trees, skies, lakes, and streams in their endless variations. He doesn't try to recreate nature (even Monet said he never got it right) or attempt storytelling. Instead, his works are simplifications and exaggerations of nature. There was a time when he felt the tyranny of the landscape; that is, he felt limited by making pictures of a place. Now, instead of making pictures, he is free to make paintings—art that comes from nature but is far more reliant on the strategies of making good art objects.
