Patricia McCleery

Patricia McCleery

"When I study the art and artifacts of ancient cultures, I see timeless design elements that I want to bring into my work. I am inspired to retell an ancient message in modern terms. "

Long-time jeweler and metalsmith Patricia McCleery describes her work as "sculptural with an organic twist." Working in her studio on thirty acres in Michigan, she takes inspiration from natural forms and archaeology. Motifs from museum artifacts, sculptural lines of tree bark, and humankind's earliest writing all contribute to these timeless, contemporary pieces.

Patricia McCleery works in silver and 22k gold, sometimes making her own metal alloys. She begins with a sketch that suggests a mood or feeling, then works directly with silver and gold sheet and wire to bring the idea to life. Hammered textures, imprints of handmade paper, and hand-carved stamps all come together in the finished piece.

McCleery studied with famed jeweler Charles Loloma, whose use of primitive surfaces and bold colors helped shape her work. Largely self-taught, she has gone on to take classes with Mary Lee Hu, Ann Havel, and other contemporary metalsmiths.
