"Furniture should be both comfortable and functional. My goal is to make heirloom quality furniture that brings beauty and joy to a customer's home."

Kalker finds unparalleled pleasure in creating a functional art form with practical use.

Kalker starts each piece with a need, his own or that of a customer, and then tries to fill that need with something beautiful and elegant. The form it takes may be inspired by anything from nature, other art forms, or just by doodling. He uses the classical lines and proportions that have worked for generations of artists before him.

As a newlywed with no money for furniture, Kalker learned to make his own. He came to love the craft. Books, magazines then videos, and much later, the internet, were his early teachers. Finally, he spent a winter in Maine at the School for Furniture Craftsmanship. That changed the game limiting him now only by his imagination.
