Inspired by a fall sunset at the golden hour, this sculpture is lightweight made of pleated aluminum. Primarily blue and accentuated with yellow and orange paint. "My work focuses on the singular beauty of the surface. Inspiration comes from experimentation and the nature of the materials I use. I am also intrigued by the ways light accentuates the height and depth of the surface, creating light and shadow. "

Reeb is interested in creating rich surfaces that are pure in form and do not rely on content. She uses encaustics (molten beeswax) to create her many-layered paintings. Through the surface, the viewer can see the variety of layers that create a sense of depth underneath.

By creating translucent layers using a mix of acrylics, encaustic wax, wood, and canvas, Reeb focuses on the dynamics of painting. She builds up luminous layers of colorful molten beeswax to capture light and depth, only to pare down the material to reveal the rich, final surface. She often paints in series to further her exploration.

Jodi Reeb received a BFA in printmaking from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her background in printmaking has strongly influenced her approach to painting. After graduating, she studied encaustic painting in a workshop with Jeff Hirst; she has been experimenting with this medium in her Minneapolis studio ever since.
