This painting was made using traditional Japanese mineral pigment painting methods, a labor intensive process that involves creating water based paints, binders, and glue using natural materials. Jeanne LaCasse utilized earth and ochre pigments, ground oyster shells, cochineal, and oxidized Japanese silver leaf, all applied to high quality paper and adhered to a dark brown matt board. Ships flat in a protective cellophane envelope. Signed on the back, it is not ready to hang.

Jeanne LaCasse Fine Arts
"My paintings begin long before I walk into my studio."

Scrawled on Jeanne LaCasse's studio wall is “Traces Suspectes en Surface” which serves as a reminder that “Things are not as they seem." The intrigue of what lies beyond human sense perception ignites her creative process.

She refers to her work as “Slow Art." Through the deliberative yet experimental handling of materials, her “metaphysical dreamscapes” slowly emerge; the invisible becomes visible. To do this she uses oil paint, cold wax medium, squeegees, brayers, carving tools, dry pigments, and more in multiple layers that are both additive and subtractive.

An avid traveler, Jeanne's pursuit of a visual arts education has taken her to China, France, Italy, Argentina, workshops across the US, as well as classes in the Chicago Metropolitan area. Crafting her own curriculum, she has sought out noteworthy artists and photographers with whom she’s studied.
