On the way home from the artist's favorite farm stand, she looked up and saw this incredible sky. She had never seen such distinctly formed mackerel clouds with a mare's tail cloud formation right next to it. She drove to the nearby marsh for a different view; in ten minutes it had vanished. The next day she painted her recollections. Oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. Wired and ready to hang.

Judy Hawkins paints bold and colorful landscapes dominated by dramatic clouds and unexpected color. Hawkins begins each oil painting at the top and works her way down, working quickly to establish mood through color and composition. She allows the paint, drips and color combinations to guide her vision for each piece.

Hawkins has painted since she was six years old. She attended Boston University School of Fine Arts, The Brooklyn Museum School, and Windham College, where she majored in art and later taught design and drawing.
