Judith Larzelere
"My 35-year-long career as a contemporary quilt maker ended late in 2016. Since that time, I have focused entirely on hand weaving. I have assembled a complete weaving studio and am currently exploring how my loom can create spontaneously creative artworks."
Color interactions build dynamic flow, excitement, and mood. To create these effects, Larzelere balances deliberate planning with uncertainty about the exact look of the completed piece. Color remains the starting point for every project. All of Larzelere's knowledge regarding color interaction and linear design present in her quilting has been carried over to her weaving, rekindling her creative drive and excitement.
She describes her style as a form of abstract surrealism and is interested in the unconscious as expressed in dream-like images and symbolic, iconic forms. She hopes the viewer will find their own narrative when looking at her work.
Larzelere holds an MFA in painting from Rutgers University. She is self-taught as a quilter and as a weaver. She studied the books of Joseph Albers and Johannes Itten to expand her understanding of color theory so she could apply this knowledge to her work.
