Far Better Turn
"I focus on good form, practicality, quality craftsmanship, as well as beauty in each of my pieces. The process of creating beautiful art that is visually appealing and wonderful to touch and hold is a goal of mine."

Wood-turning artist, Jack Dohallow, describes the process of turning wood into captivating pieces of art and utility as a passion. The fluidity of glass art and southwest pottery is such an inspiration, and he works to incorporate its influence into his wood work.

Jack creates his work in his studio, working a wood lathe, spinning wood, and carving it as it spins. From preparing wood to discovering its colors, textures, smells, and uniqueness to designing a one-of-a-kind work from nature is enjoyable. From local and imported wood from around the world, he creates bowls, small boxes for secret treasures, platters, vases, and sculptures according to what the wood says.

Jack’s love affair with woodturning began during high school. In 2003, Jack had a remarkable opportunity to work as a production wood turner on the scenic Oregon Coast. There he honed his skills daily. Discovering the American Association of Woodturners was a pivotal moment for him. Through this community he met professional woodturners, Graeme Priddle, Trent Bosh, Barbra Dill, and others who have had a major influence on his work.
