Russell Thurston looks at every painting as an experiment and exploration, but also as a collaboration between his initial plans and what develops as he paints. Thurston works with encaustic materials and often embeds items from nature into his work.

This encaustic and oil painting was created on heavy rag paper and includes a handmade oak float frame. It's ready to hang.

Russell Thurston

"Appropriating nature and technology as a starting point, my painting process is like a journey without a map. Sometimes, I’m not sure what direction the work will take."

Russell looks at every painting as an experiment, an exploration, and also a collaboration between his plans and the painting’s. Sometimes the work becomes a mirror, reflecting the world he's trying to make sense of. Other times, it’s a window into a place he’d like to escape to.

Russell works with encaustic materials — using pigments mixed with hot wax that are burned in as an inlay. Often, Russell will embed items from nature into his work. He produces encaustic paintings on paper and on panels.

Russell was born in Norman, Oklahoma, and received a BFA from Cal State University and an MFA from School of the Art Institute Chicago. He currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his wife and three dogs.
