Soft fabric beads are sewn from vintage saris, stitched with kantha embroidery, and filled with lightweight cotton batting, creating a necklace that is both bold and fun. Each is unique. Bead colors and patterns will vary.

Born in southern Japan, Mieko Mintz uses handcrafted textiles from around the world to make contemporary pieces. Her signature line includes jackets made from vintage sari kantha, each with its own variety of colors and its own story.

Mintz's work follows in the kantha tradition. First, her designs are made into kantha throws in West Bengal, which she then cuts to fit her jacket designs. Her focus is a kantha line that is not only comfortable, but also contemporary and sophisticated.

Cuttings left over from making the jackets are recycled one more time to create hats, bags, and jewelry.

This necklace feels magical!

I opened the shipping box to find this wonderfully soft and beautifully colored bag that truly felt empty when I picked it up. It was that light. Inside was a visually substantial but incredibly light and delicate necklace. Each fabric bead was unique in texture and coloration and I felt compelled to study each one for all the delicate hand stitching in composition. I have a sensitivity to metal, even those of the precious variety, and don't enjoy anything heavy or bulky around my neck. At the risk of becoming a fashion cliche I can't wait to add more of Mieko's pieces because each will make its own statement and a perfect wardrobe addition for everyday. Travel. And me. Especially since I'm not one that particularly appreciates anything that's too precious. But this necklace is own kind of precious. Not too much. Just enough. I only hope that I can finally afford a larger piece of Mieko's wearable art. If only a diet would help!

Beautiful necklace! Shorter length. This is my 3rd Kantha necklace I have purchased from this fabulous designer. People always approach me and want to touch the necklace! It is a unique art piece that is well constructed, light, pretty, unique, classy, fun! Even the packaging was fancy as it came in a lovely fabric bag.

Unique wearable art!

I will enjoy wearing this necklace for many different kinds of occasions, and its black/gray color combination will coordinate perfectly with my large collection of clothing in those colors.
