Susie Aoki
When Susie Aoki moved to the coastal mountains of Oregon, a series of fortunate events led her to learn metalsmithing, and she has been captivated by it ever since. She has heard her work described as both "industrial" and "organic" and agrees that it is probably a little of both. Her goal is to design everyday pieces that are creatively eye-catching as well as comfortable and flattering to wear.
Aoki cuts, shapes, and textures mixed metals by hand and uses both hot and cold techniques to combine them. She works mostly in sterling silver but also incorporates gold, copper, and gemstones for color. All her work is oxidized.
Aoki often takes private lessons when she wants to learn a new skill. Otherwise, she is self-taught and relies on books, jeweler friends, the internet, and the metals themselves to teach her what she needs to know.
