Melodie Owen

"I create work for the bold and sophisticated. I start with shapes or stones that intrigue me and synthesize these into unique work that expresses its wearer’s sense of style. Each piece is new with intrinsic flair. I work in silver and gold, adding color and texture with gems and Japanese Kumihimo braids. My work continually evolves. I craft each piece personally in my High Desert New Mexico studio."

Melodie’s mother was an accomplished painter who imbued her with the notion that we can challenge ourselves to create objects of great beauty. Melodie's work reflects that teaching with color, design, and bold artistic statement. She challenges herself to create new, unexpected elements to complement what Mother Nature has given us.

Melodie is a multi-faceted artist. She creates dramatic, complex designs using traditional fabrication techniques; the torch, the hammer, the saw. She often includes Japanese Kumihimo braids. This centuries-old technique has long been part of her repertoire. The finest Japanese silk threads create a braid elegant on its own or in combination with silver, gold, gems, and Japanese glass beads.

Melodie's artist mother fostered an environment of creativity and exploration and arranged for her to start an apprenticeship in a fine jewelry store at the age of 14. Her past work in architectural design and construction influences her design style and appreciation of shapes, materials, and texture. She is a charter member and director of the American Kumihimo Society.
