This coffee table is part of the artist's "Elemental Production Series." The colorful, sculptural base supports a 1/2" clear glass top. As with all the pieces in this series, this table is fabricated largely from reclaimed and post-consumer materials.

The base is fabricated from reclaimed Douglas fir, cherry veneer, and bent wood laminations. The green elements are finished with milk paint, an old-fashioned, environmentally friendly paint consisting of pigments, clay slip, and milk proteins. The central egg form is carved from laminated reclaimed particle board treated with multicolored layers of acrylic products. The base curve is created from reclaimed plywood and cherry veneer with edges finished to match the egg form. The base has a hand-rubbed polyurethane finish that is virtually maintenance free. While the glass in this image appears dark, or smokey, it is completely transparent.

Derek Secor Davis

"I create pieces that are in an unlikely state of balance."

Derek Secor Davis creates sculptural pieces of furniture that play with the ideas of balance, weathering, and transformation. Inspired by the presence of change in the natural world, Davis constructs furniture using organic forms that appear as if they have been precariously stacked. By contrasting weathered textures with polished finishes, Davis suggests that everything is in a state of metamorphosis.

Maintaining a rigorous commitment to craftsmanship, Davis uses shape, texture, line and color to create furniture pieces that are eloquent and compelling works of art.
