Griffith's early inspirations include curvilinear wood furniture and a museum collection of ancient jewelry crafted from bone, wood, and ivory. For Griffith, cutting open a log and seeing the exposed grain is one of the most exciting parts of the whole process. He strives to convey this excitement by crafting carefully finished, simple forms to celebrate the beauty of each piece of wood.
Griffith harvests trees in a water stressed orchard in New Mexico. He also barters with other woodworkers for their offcuts. Griffith's design process consists of sketching and working with paper models. Then wood is cut into thin strips, steamed, wrapped around custom-built forms, and clamped in place. Once cured, the piece is shaped by hand and undergoes a multi-step finishing process.
While finishing a BS in Industrial Design, Griffith's aesthetics were influenced by European professors and an internship in Switzerland. He soon realized that his true passion was handwork, and his preference for the plane over the pixel led him to complete a formal training program in Fine Woodworking and Professional Craft. He continues to develop by visiting the nearby Santa Fe galleries and by regular contact with fellow artists.
