Proof that opposites attract, a protective water bird stands guard over her sizeable fish friend in this whimsical scene. Using a band saw, the artist hand carves this playfully odd couple from poplar, layering acrylic and latex enamel paint in rich tones and rubbing and dry brushing to add lifelike texture.

"I have a strong attachment to the old toys and objects I had as a child, and it comes out now in my love of animals and mythology."

Dona Dalton considers her work to be "toys as sculpture." Drawing from observation, and an enthusiasm for the narrative potential of Egyptian mythology, she creates works that imply relationship and connection, playfulness and spirituality. A bird at the workplace or a cat in a boat can be the best of companions.

Using poplar, pine, and aspen, Dalton carves wood on a band saw, and uses a rotary carver for smaller figures and details. Like icing on a cake, the colorful layers of acrylic paint, latex enamel, and metallic leaf bring each piece to life.

Dona Dalton received a BFA in sculpture from the Philadelphia College of Art. Her work has been shown at the American Craft Council Show, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, and the Washington DC Craft Show, among others. Her work can be found in galleries throughout the USA.

Love the fish

This bird is bigger, taller than some of the other pieces the artist sells. We were going to put it on a side table, but it looked too big. So, it is now perched a top a taller cabinet. We live in the PNW and our home has some lodge-like features -- wood beams, stone pillars, etc. This piece is a perfect complement to the architecture and other artwork we have which largely features nature. It is a distinctive piece.
