This piece is our take on the wall decor pieces that were in every home during the mid-century era. The edge grain Baltic birch sun rests atop a horizon of walnut veneered Baltic birch, and three birds of the same material glide through the air in front of the sun. Inspired in part by classic mid-century design and in part by an accidental drop (and break) of a circular cut of wood, we just adore this 43” long wall piece.

It’s the kind of wall decor that stops you in your tracks. This highly designed, yet simple work of art will look good in any room in your home - above a couch, over a headboard, or maybe on the wall behind the dining room table.

Finished in oil and wax.

Justin Hossle
"I create mid-century modern/minimalist furniture and decor that you’ll love now and proudly hand down later. My simple, clean and modern designs invoke memories of some of the greatest designers of the 20th Century, though will feel completely new and exciting in your home or office environment. I pride myself on running a sustainable and ethical business and hope you enjoy what I have to offer."

Justin Hossle, owner of Relic Modern - Furniture & Objects, is a designer, craftsman, and everything in between. His work evokes a simple, yet sophisticated elegance, and focuses on stripping away all extraneous elements, so that the viewer is left reveling in the shape of the piece and the beauty of the natural wood. In addition to this, his pieces feature (instead of hide) the process of creation.

Using the highest-quality Baltic birch (13 layers of solid birch strips) with two layers of solid veneer (either in maple or walnut), Justin’s signature style features exposed edges, which allows the striking layers of the birch to remain visible. Simple joinery techniques with carefully curated details round out the pieces, which are always finished with natural oils and waxes.

Justin is entirely self taught, with discovery, trial, and error being his main educators. He developed his techniques prior to learning that they were standard woodworking methods, and continues to create, test and play whenever he gets the chance. He began his woodworking journey in 2017 on a whim, and has worked tirelessly to perfect his methods and build his business since that point.
