Katherine Steichen Rosing

"I am perpetually awed by nature: the colors, textures, and patterns of our existence. Our forests and lakes are an important part of my soul."

Katherine Rosing's work is characterized by transformation. The cycles of time and seasons, the everchanging rhythms of the forest, the ephemeral ripples of drizzling rain on a pond—these things inspire Rosing's abstract and symbolic landscapes.

Surface and color are important in Rosing's paintings; she develops relief surfaces to enhance the play of light and color like nature's textures. She builds up layers of acrylic, often scratching on the surface to suggest rain, sleet, and other forms of precipitation. She also uses techniques such as scumbling and glazing to suggest the changes in nature that continually inspire her.

Born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin, she earned a BA from the University of Wisconsin, a BFA from University of Colorado, and an MFA in painting and drawing from Northern Illinois University. Her artwork has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the United States and abroad.
