These blown glass cairns are metaphorical landmarks for the pathways of our lives. The main body in shades of amethyst and amber is topped with black, olive green, and russet brown stones. The beautiful translucent colors will show at their best with lots of ambient light or directional back lighting. Hand-formed and free-blown rocks are fused and etched for a stone like finish. Each is unique and will vary.

Melanie Guernsey-Leppla

"My years working with glass have been a continual exploration inspired both by nature and by the vitreous material itself. "

Whether she is working in the studio with an occasional stray dragonfly, gardening, walking by the river, or traveling, glass artist Melanie Guernsey-Leppla finds inspiration in her observations of the intricacies of nature and her surroundings.

When something of particular interest strikes the artist, she asks herself the simple question, "what if?" and tries to discern how the qualities of the glass would work with the idea. By allowing herself the artistic liberty to try something new based on her own caprice, she often finds herself engaged in new and exciting series of work.

Melanie Guernsey-Leppla has been working professionally with glass since graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BFA in 1986. Her professional career includes shows internationally as well as across the United States. Honors include two fellowship grants from The Creative Glass Center of America and a fellowship grant from the New Jersey Council for the Arts. Her work is included in the Museum of American Craft and the Museum of American Glass as well as numerous important private collections.

Beautiful art glass

I love the piece, but only gave it 4 stars because the purple color is dark and dominant. I know photos don't always represent color accurately but in this case, I feel it's quite a bit of. I was hoping for more of the amber color. Fortunately I found a spot in my house where this color works, but would have preferred more amber in the base of the cairn.

Cairn totem in sunset medium

The cairn is beautiful and well constructed. However I was disappointed that the color is much darker than pictured from the catalog. I purchased this for my fireplace mantle which is Stone and the cairn gets lost. But it is a beautiful work of art. I would recommend it if you don't mind the darker color.

Colorful and beautiful

These glass rock cairns are really beautiful in these burgundy colors! Each was wrapped SUPER carefully and then placed inside a large box with Styrofoam peanuts all around. They arrived quickly with a handwritten thank you note from Melanie as well as a brief background description of rock cairns, how they were first created and the meaning(s) behind them. It was a really lovely buying experience and I would highly recommend this lovely artist! Thank you so much for a wonderful transaction!!! 5 Stars!!!
