David Forlano and Steve Ford

Ford/Forlano Art Jewelry
"We want our work to allude to things you've seen in nature, yet be compelling in its own right."

Steve Ford and David Forlano began collaborating on jewelry design in 1988. Working with polymer clay, their early works were characterized by bright colors and complex, caned cross-sectional patterns. Ford and Forlano were early innovators in what is now a popular fine craft material. They taught workshops nationally, self-published two calendars of polymer clay work, and Ford co-authored a how-to book on the subject.

Today, Ford and Forlano primarily make one-of-a-kind jewelry, passing pieces back and forth between their Philadelphia and Santa Fe studios at different stages in the creative process. With the introduction of precious materials such as sterling silver, gold, and pearls, their work is as bold and expressive as ever. Part of their goal is to transform an inorganic, man-made material into something that looks as if it was found on the beach, or growing in the woods. The designs feature complex, layered surface treatments with mysterious and unusual colors. Ford and Forlano strive to give each element in a piece its own diverse character while maintaining a unified look as a whole.

Steve grew up in the Midwest, and studied art in St. Louis, Rome, and Philadelphia. He has been a full-time studio artist for the past twenty years. He lives in the Germantown section of Philadelphia with his partner of fifteen years. David is originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia. He developed a passion for drawing and painting at an early age and went on to study art in Philadelphia and Rome. In addition to his business collaboration in jewelry, he continues artistic explorations in painting, printmaking, sound, and video. He lives with his wife in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Squiggle necklace

I own several of these squiggle necklaces. Always receive compliments; lightweight to wear; and always surprised in the patterns it makes when I put it on.

Pandemic-perfect piece

I love this piece. It is playful, interesting, and broadcasts creativity. During zoom meetings, that replaced our in person professional interactions, we only see the face and upper body of our partners and it is nice to wear something unique and visually pleasing.

Extraordinary necklace; extraordinary customer service

Recently bought this colorful and fabulously crafted necklace. The day it arrived, my husband and I had just come home from our design firms when I opened it's very cool container. I had not even worn the necklace, when my architect husband took it to exam it's structure, tested how far one of the polymer links could flex - and broke it. I was actually speechless in response, stunned that someone who is an ace w/ fabrication actually broke my playful and unique necklace fresh out of the box. Oh so unhappy. Note to purchasers: necklace itself is flexible and can made be into many shapes because of the connectors between segments can swivel & bend in various directions. But the segments are polymer, not rubber! Don't subject it to a lot of force... Duh.
Husband quickly contacted one of the artists who was particularly gracious & helpful. I think the artist may actually have had a laugh about a managing director of an architecture firm breaking his necklace right out of the box. It seems they had a good time talking fabrication shop talk, and the artist agreed w/ my husband's idea of using a type of bonding material we have in the design studio to fix the broken segment.. But the artist also offered to fix or replace the necklace if my husband's repair was not to my liking. The mend, however, was virtually undetectable. I really had to hunt for the place it had been broken & fixed.
Back to the necklace itself: every time I wear it, it is so light weight that I could almost forget I'm wearing it except people, strangers even, constantly tell me how hip and unique it is. An absolutely wonderful, exuberant, entertaining, colorful, wearable piece of art!
