Soft fabric beads are sewn from vintage silk saris, stitched with kantha embroidery, and filled with lightweight cotton batting, creating a vibrant necklace that is both bold and fun. Each is unique; bead colors and patterns will vary.

"Traditionally, kantha were supposed to help keep their wearers safe from harm and aid in obtaining happiness and prosperity, all of which Mieko wishes for you."

Born in southern Japan, Mieko Mintz uses handcrafted textiles from around the world to make contemporary pieces. Her signature line includes jackets made from vintage sari kantha, each with its own variety of colors and its own story.

Mintz's work follows in the kantha tradition. First, her designs are made into kantha throws in West Bengal, which she then cuts to fit her jacket designs. Her focus is a kantha line that is not only comfortable, but also contemporary and sophisticated.

Cuttings left over from making the jackets are recycled one more time to create hats, bags, and jewelry.

Elegant necklace, subdued color

This is a lovely necklace and it adds elegance to my mainly black wardrobe. I'm giving it only 4 stars because I expected the reds would be more vibrant than they are. (I should not have based my expectations and purchase decision on the colors on the website, and given more credence to the statement that "bead colors..." will vary.) I didn't return the necklace because I think I can adapt to the subtle shades of "red". I'll just be more cautious with my next purchase and return it if I'm not in love within a week of purchase.
