"My work is about finding a fluidity in pattern. My daily life—my routine, repetition of body movement, patterns in my thoughts—influence the final design of my pieces."
Michael Hayes makes simple forms to hold intricate patterns. The hypnotic and optically changing patterns will catch the viewer's eye. This bounce of light within the piece gives an added layer of life to each piece.
Hayes uses traditional Italian techniques along with the American Studio Glass movement’s enthusiasm to investigate and repurpose techniques. Michael creates his own color palette and pattern bars. Starting with a simple cane pull and often evolving into complex twisty cane and murrini. These multicolored canes are chosen and arranged which are then applied to a glass bubble.
He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a B.S. in Economics. He has blown glass and helped build studios in St Louis and New Zealand. He has taught classes at Washington University and Penland School of Crafts. He currently lives in Spruce Pine, NC.
