Amber Archer

"My passion is throwing—it has given me a sense of discipline and freedom."

Pottery is a form of a meditation for Amber Archer. Her work expresses an ongoing interest in exploring color and sound correlations and the effects they produce.

For 13 years, Archer collaborated with architectural ceramicist Shel Neymark to create a line of nontraditional raku bowls. Since taking over the business, she has expanded the color palette and added new forms. While traditional raku colors are usually subdued, earthy, or metallic, Archer's are unusually bright and bold, reflecting the vivid contrasts of the southwestern landscape where she lives. The crackled surface of the pieces lends an appearance of age to contemporary forms.
