One Blue Marble
"As an artist, I strive to interpret the world around me through my work. As an amateur naturalist, I see firsthand that even the most beautiful things are never perfect. My work embraces these imperfections—its “birthmarks”—the subtle evidence of the hand that made it. Perfection is not my goal. Taking my cues from nature, my work has an organic quality where rough edges, irregular shapes, and imperfect circles are celebrated as sites of beauty."

Vaughan Nelson has been influenced by a wide range of sources over the course of his life. A strong love of color is one of the defining elements of his work, and helps set it apart. His visual language draws inspiration from Art Deco, Art Nouveau, the Memphis Style, folk art, and, above all, the natural world. These influences come together throughout his body of work, creating pieces that feel both structured and playful, intentional yet alive.

Nelson was born in the Azores, Portugal, in 1968 to an English mother and an American father. Because his father served in the United States Air Force, their family relocated approximately every four years. This nomadic upbringing allowed Nelson to experience a wide variety of places and cultures. By the time he graduated from high school in 1986 at the age of seventeen, he had spent more than eight years living in England, with the remainder of his life split across the United States.

After more than thirty years in San Diego, California, Nelson and his husband relocated to Tucson, Arizona. The dramatic shift in landscape, light, and environment has already begun to influence his work, introducing new colors, forms, and rhythms that continue to shape his evolving practice.
