Taken straight from the sketchbook, this salt shaker has been re-imagined in cold-pressed steel. The steel is finished through an oxidation process using a black patina which inhibits rust while allowing the metal to retain its quality and texture. A clear coat is applied for further protection.

Issued in editions of 20 every sculpture is still slightly different due to the unique qualities of each piece of steel and atmospheric conditions during creation and oxidation. This work is hung directly onto the wall through four small drill holes with metal dowels. Very durable work that can be dusted or washed with a damp cloth.

All metal sketches can be custom scaled up to six feet on the longest edge.

"My sculptures are all about the beauty of line. I strive to faithfully recreate the immediacy and intimacy of pencil drawings from my sketchbook in metal."

Arsenault strives to capture the quirky and unexpected, either holding onto formal elements and techniques, or rejecting them when the rules require breaking. In his work, playful experimentation and happy accidents meet formal rigors, evoking freshness and a sense of visual intrigue.

Paul Arsenault's ''Metal Sketches'' open his sketchbook to the world. What begins as an intimate, personal sketch is transformed into sculpture through a multi-step process, finally rendered in sheet metal and displayed on the wall. Each ''Metal Sketch'' sits 2 inches from the wall, creating intricate shadows as the light changes.

Paul Arsenault graduated with honors from Massachusetts College of Art & Design in 2000. He received an MA in fine art from Cambridge School of Art in Cambridge, UK in 2016. He works out of a studio building in Somerville, MA as well as a metal shop in Rhode Island.
